JR EAST “Cassiopeia” Sleeping Car to Be Preserved and Exhibited Near Ōmiya Station (Scheduled for Spring 2027)

Overview

  • Announcement Date: September 3, 2025

  • Exhibition Start: Scheduled for spring 2027

  • Location: Outdoor plaza of “Sakuragi PPJ” (provisional name), west exit of Ōmiya Station

  • Preserved Car: Car No. 1 (Cassiopeia Suite with observation room)

History of the Train

  • Debut: 1999 (Ueno – Sapporo route)

  • Formation: 12 cars total (10 sleeping cars, 1 dining car, 1 lounge car)

  • Features: Fully double-deck, all private compartments, pioneer of “cruise train” style

  • 2016: Regular service ended after the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen; operated as a tour train thereafter

  • June 2025: Retired due to aging and other factors

Exhibition Details

  • Car No. 1 with an observation room suite will be preserved and displayed

  • Information panels and an observation deck will be installed

  • To serve as a new symbol of “Ōmiya, the Railway Town”

Facility Overview (Sakuragi PPJ Project)

  • Developers: JR East, Daiwa House Industry, and others

  • Scale: Approx. 30,000 m² total floor area, consisting of five buildings (commercial and office facilities, etc.)

  • Construction Start: April 2025
