On August 4, 2025, JR Hokkaido unveiled the launch schedule and conceptual designs for its new sightseeing trains, Red Star and Blue Star, developed under the “Start Train Project” aimed at revitalizing local communities.
Based on the KiHa 143 series DMU, two trainsets (four cars in total) are being refurbished with a theme of “luxury” and “quality.” Although service was originally planned for spring 2026, significant corrosion and distortion discovered in the car bodies have delayed the schedule.

● Red Star

Route: Sapporo to Abashiri (via Hakodate and Sekihoku Lines)

Note: From July 2027, it will also operate as a chartered cruise train for travel agencies within Hokkaido.
● Blue Star

Route: Asahikawa/Biei to Furano (Furano Line), later extending to Abashiri–Shiretoko-Shari (Senmō Line)

■ Red Star – Train Design

Painted in a deep red inspired by the iconic "Red Star" symbol of the Hokkaido Development Commission, the train features star emblems and ornate decorations on the front and sides, evoking a bold and refined image.

The interior embraces luxury using natural materials, offering a warm and elegant atmosphere:
Car 1: Box seats with a salon-style conversation area
Car 2: Lounge car for dining and relaxation
Car 3: Semi-compartment seating
Car 4: Tatami-floored observation suite stretching the full width of the car
■ Blue Star – Train Design
[Exterior]
The train features a rich blue tone inspired by the lavender fields and “Blue Pond” along the route. Like Red Star, it boasts elegant star motifs for a premium finish.

Designed with comfort in mind, Blue Star offers:
Wooden four-seat box arrangements for a relaxed group journe
Large panoramic windows in each car for scenic views
