Initiatives Toward Automatic Operation on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Announced September 29)

Introduction of TASC (Train Automatic Stop Control)

  • Implementation Period: Fall 2026

  • Scope: All stations and all revenue trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen

  • Features: Automatically stops trains at the designated position

  • Benefits:

    • Shorter average stopping time compared to manual operation

    • Improved timetable stability

    • Higher stopping accuracy allows for shorter platform doors, reducing installation and renewal costs

Development of the GOA2 Automatic Operation System

  • GOA2 Definition: A system where a driver remains in the cab while the train runs in automatic mode

  • Testing Record: Over 150,000 km of trial runs completed with no fundamental issues

  • Testing Conditions: Trials conducted even during daytime revenue service hours

Future Plans

  • Fall 2026: Start of TASC operation

  • Around 2028: Introduction of rolling stock equipped with GOA2 automatic operation functions

    • Includes the ability for drivers to perform door operations directly from the cab
