Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko No. 63 – Investigation Status on Train Failure (August 24)

Overview

  • Time of Incident: Around 2:10 p.m.

  • Section: Between Ōmiya and Oyama Stations

  • Event: Emergency brake activated, train came to a stop

Emergency Measures

  • After onboard inspection by the crew, the train was confirmed to be operable.

  • 3:55 p.m. – Slow-speed operation resumed toward Oyama Station

  • 5:22 p.m. – Arrived at Oyama Station

  • Subsequent Operations: Service suspended between Oyama and Morioka; approximately 560 passengers transferred to following trains

Preliminary Cause Analysis

  • Faulty Component: Car No. 10 – “Coupling/Decoupling Switching Device”

  • Condition: The device, which should have been set to “Decoupled” mode, had switched to “Coupled” mode

  • This switch triggered the emergency braking system

Current Investigation Status

  • The reason why the device switched to “Coupled” mode remains unknown

  • Detailed investigation is ongoing

  • The train was moved to the Oyama Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center the same night for further analysis
