Soni Highland – Nara

Soni Highland, located in Nara Prefecture near the border with Mie Prefecture, is a vast, open grassland surrounded by gentle mountains.
It’s especially famous for its silver pampas grass fields (susuki) that turn golden under the autumn sunset, creating one of the most breathtaking seasonal landscapes in Japan.

Nestled within the Murō-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park, Soni Highland offers beautiful hiking trails, panoramic views, and a tranquil rural atmosphere far removed from the city.

  • At sunset, the golden waves of grass shine with warm orange hues — a spectacular natural phenomenon that draws photographers and nature lovers.

2. Mount Kameyama (亀山)

  • A short hiking trail (around 40 minutes to the top) leads to the Mount Kameyama Observatory overlooking the highland.

  • The name “Kameyama” (Turtle Mountain) comes from its gentle, rounded shape resembling a turtle’s back.

  • From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Nara Basin, Aoyama Highlands, and surrounding mountain ranges.

3. Mount Yoroi (兜岳) & Mount Kabuto (鎧岳)

  • Distinctive twin mountains seen from the highland, known for their helmet- and armor-like shapes.

  • Popular subjects for landscape photography, especially in the early morning mist.

Activities
