JR East has begun developing a new E927 Series Shinkansen inspection train, aiming to achieve high-speed, high-precision, and automated inspections through advanced AI and DX (Digital Transformation) technologies.
Purpose of Development
The new model will succeed the current East-i inspection train.
By integrating AI and DX, JR East seeks to enable automated and remote inspections, reduce manual labor, and build a more efficient and precise maintenance system.
In the future, autonomous operation, similar to regular passenger trains, is also being considered.
Overview
-
Model: E927 Series (Next-generation Shinkansen inspection train)
-
Inspection Start: Fiscal year 2029 (planned)
-
Service Area: Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata, and Akita Shinkansen lines
-
Maximum Speed: 320 km/h
Main Inspection Equipment and Features
Track Displacement Measurement System
Measures rail distortion.
While East-i used multiple distance sensors, it faced challenges at speeds above 275 km/h.
The new model integrates all sensors into a single underfloor unit and adopts 2D laser multi-point measurement technology developed for the ALFA-X project.
→ Enables more detailed and accurate data collection, achieving stable, high-precision inspections even at high speeds.
Overhead Line Fittings Monitoring System
Replaces traditional manual visual inspections.
High-resolution cameras capture images analyzed by AI, which automatically detects fittings and evaluates their condition.
→ Improves inspection quality and efficiency through automated screening.
Trolley Wire Condition Measurement System
Switches from laser reflection-based diameter measurement to a slit-light + camera imaging method.
Analyzes wire cross-section and position from captured images, allowing more precise detection of wear and height variations.
Design
-
Color Scheme: To be selected from employee design submissions across JR East Group.
-
Design Supervision: tangerine, the design firm behind the E10 Series.
-
The final design will be jointly refined and completed by summer 2026.
Future Outlook
Details of both the dedicated Shinkansen inspection train (E927 Series) and its base model (the next-generation Akita Shinkansen train) will be announced once finalized.
JR East continues to promote next-generation maintenance powered by AI and DX technologies, establishing a new inspection framework to ensure safe and reliable Shinkansen operations.
