JR West to Introduce Autonomous Operation on Hokuriku Shinkansen "Tsuruga–Kanazawa Section" by FY2029
JR West has announced plans to introduce autonomous train operation on the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Kanazawa by fiscal year 2029. The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka, passing through key cities in the Hokuriku region. With the opening of the Kanazawa–Tsuruga section scheduled for March 2024, discussions are already underway regarding the extension beyond Tsuruga.
Background of Autonomous Operation Introduction
As part of its medium-term management plan to improve "transport quality and productivity," JR West is exploring autonomous train technologies in collaboration with JR East. System development and technical evaluations are currently in progress.
Meanwhile, JR East announced its own autonomous operation plans for the Joetsu Shinkansen in September 2023, with the following schedule:
- FY2028: GOA2 (Grade of Automation 2) operation between Nagaoka and Niigata Shinkansen Depot
- FY2029: GOA4 (Fully Automated Operation) between Niigata and Niigata Depot
JR East also envisions expanding autonomous operations to other lines, including the Tohoku and Hokuriku Shinkansen, in the future.
Current Developments and Prospects for the Hokuriku Shinkansen
The Kanazawa–Tsuruga section, set to open in March 2024, will feature state-of-the-art technology aimed at boosting productivity and operational efficiency. As discussions continue regarding the extension west of Tsuruga, the introduction of autonomous operations is expected to enhance transport capacity, address workforce shortages, and reduce operating costs.
This initiative marks a significant step toward regional revitalization and improving transportation services on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The implementation of autonomous operations aligns with broader efforts to modernize and optimize Japan's high-speed rail network.
