Located in Itsuura (Izura), Kitaibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, teamLab Yūkoku-Onden-Ato opened on September 30, 2024. It transforms an abandoned terraced rice field (“onden-ato”) and surrounding forest into a night museum where art, light, sound, and nature blend to create immersive experiences.
Why Visit?
-
Walk through a forest and terraced field ruins lit up by countless lights and digital art projections.
-
Experience atmosphere: darkness, forest canopy, water reflections, and ambient sound combine for a mysterious, meditative feel.
-
Night museum effect: the natural site becomes art after dusk, highlighting the beauty of the landscape in contrast with digital elements.
Main Features & Facilities
-
Art in the Ruins: The terraced rice field remains (“onden-ato”) are integrated into the art installation. Lamps float on water in the rice-paddy ruins.
-
Forest Walks: Trails through forested areas, where light installations react to movement or environmental cues.
-
Glamping & Cottages: There are cottages and glamping tents available. Some are designed so you stay “within” the art — e.g. with views to the forest that becomes part of the artwork at night.
-
Onsen (Hot Springs): A flowing-source onsen facility is part of the site; at night, the onsen and the lamps in the rice-field ruins visually combine.

What to Expect / Tips
-
It’s best experienced at night, when the light and digital art are visible. Day visits will show the terrain and forest, but the main artwork comes alive after dusk.
-
Because much of the path is forest + ground may be uneven or damp, wear comfortable shoes (water-resistant if possible).
-
Bring a jacket: nights in forested areas can be chilly.
-
Photography is popular—long exposures for light scenes will work well. Just be mindful of other visitors and lighting.
-
Observe quiet times: there’s a “silent time” (from ~23:00 to 7:00) at the glamping site where noise and lighting should be minimized.
Why It’s Special
teamLab Yūkoku-Onden-Ato is more than an art installation—it’s a place where nature, history, and art merge. The location (an unused terraced rice-field site, reclaimed by forest), combined with interactive light and sound, builds a magical atmosphere that changes with seasons and weather. It’s not just seeing art—it’s being inside it.
