GALA Yuzawa Ski Resort – Niigata

Nestled in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture, GALA Yuzawa is one of Japan’s most unique and accessible ski resorts — and the only one in the country with its own Shinkansen (bullet train) station directly connected to the slopes.
Just about 75 minutes from Tokyo Station, GALA Yuzawa offers an easy and unforgettable day trip into Japan’s snow country.

Famous for its powder snow, breathtaking alpine views, and full-service ski facilities, it’s a destination where visitors can experience the beauty of winter in Japan — whether skiing, snowboarding, or simply enjoying hot springs and mountain scenery.

Overview

Opened in 1990, GALA Yuzawa was developed by JR East as a “snow resort directly linked to the Shinkansen network”, making winter sports more accessible to city residents and tourists.

The resort sits on the southern slopes of Mount Takatsuma in Echigo-Yuzawa, an area long known for its heavy snowfall, natural hot springs, and rice wine (sake) culture.

Because of its convenience and scenic beauty, GALA Yuzawa has become one of Japan’s most popular day-trip ski destinations, attracting both domestic and international visitors every winter.

A Resort Directly Connected to the Shinkansen

GALA Yuzawa’s greatest feature is its dedicated bullet train station — GALA Yuzawa Station — located inside the same building as the ski center.

When you arrive, you step off the train and walk directly into the resort’s base lodge, known as Cowabunga. Inside, you’ll find ski rental counters, changing rooms, ticket offices, restaurants, and even a hot spring — all under one roof.

No buses, no transfers, no hassle — it’s the most convenient ski experience in Japan.

Skiing and Snowboarding

GALA Yuzawa has about 17 ski runs catering to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders.

  • Base Elevation: 358 m

  • Top Elevation: 1,181 m

  • Vertical Drop: Approx. 823 m

The slopes are divided into three main zones:

1. Central Area (Main Zone)

Ideal for beginners and families. Gentle slopes, wide courses, and beautiful snow views make it perfect for first-timers. The Melody and Gigi courses are especially popular for easy skiing and snowboarding practice.

2. Northern Area (Intermediate)

Features slightly steeper courses and long cruising runs. The Roman Holiday course offers spectacular panoramic views of the Japanese Alps.

3. Southern Area (Advanced)

Challenging slopes and mogul courses for experienced skiers. The Eliza and Swan runs are well-known for their thrilling drops and powder conditions.

All areas are connected by gondolas and chair lifts, so it’s easy to explore the entire mountain.
