The Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden) will introduce its new 700 Series trains, set to begin operations in fiscal year 2026. This marks the company’s first new rolling stock introduction in 20 years since the 500 Series debuted in 2006.
Key Features of the New "700 Series" Trains
Enhanced Safety, Security, and Comfort
To provide a safer and more comfortable experience for passengers, the following features will be installed:
-
In-train security cameras: Constant monitoring to deter and address incidents.
-
Side cameras: Enhanced visibility for safe boarding/alighting and exterior monitoring.
-
Emergency intercoms: Passengers can directly communicate with train crew in emergencies.
-
Barrier-free design: Includes wheelchair-accessible spaces and lower floors for easier boarding.
-
Multilingual announcements: Catered toward international tourists visiting the Enoshima and Kamakura areas.
The train will also be the first railway car to use a special film on the windows, reducing glare and preventing shattering, while allowing passengers to enjoy the vivid coastal scenery.
Environmentally Friendly Technologies
The 700 Series features the latest energy-saving innovations:
-
VVVF inverter control systems
-
Regenerative braking
These technologies reduce electricity consumption by approximately 49% compared to the older 1000 Series trains (which use resistance control), aligning with Enoden’s efforts toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Exterior Design
The 700 Series sports a futuristic design, distinguishing itself from previous Enoden models:
-
A steeply sloped front window and sharp eye-line lighting create a modern, refined look.
-
The larger front glass panel offers passengers expansive views of the scenic Shonan coastline.
Interior Design
Designed for both daily commuters and tourists, the interior aims to deliver a memorable travel experience:
-
Seats are oriented toward the ocean, letting riders fully enjoy the coastal views while in motion.
-
The seat and floor colors reflect three local themes inspired by Kamakura and Enoshima. Each train will feature a different theme, making every ride visually unique.
