Mount Aso (Aso-san) – Kumamoto

Located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest active volcanoes and a symbol of Kyushu’s dramatic landscape. Its massive caldera, stretching about 25 kilometers across, is among the largest on Earth and is home to towns, farms, and hot spring resorts.

At its center rises a cluster of peaks, including Nakadake, which remains active and often emits smoke and gases. On clear days, visitors can approach the crater rim to witness its steaming depths, making it one of the most accessible volcanic craters in the world.
